Some of my very favorite books of all time are the books written by Jan Karon called the Mitford books. In all there are 10 books regarding the little town of Mitford and their residents. If you haven't read any of these books, I urge you to just try the first one "AT HOME IN MITFORD". You will be hooked.

The books are set around the actual town of Blowing Rock, NC, and the main character is Father Tim, who is an Episcopalian priest. Father Tim is a very dedicated man whose life touches all whom he comes in contact with. The books are full of scripture which is worked into the stories with brilliance. The characters are so real you will feel as though you know them personally. From Father Tim to Dooley, to Barnabus the dog, to Cynthia, who Father Tim fell in love with, the whole group of books are based on normal people living for God on a daily basis. They are so interesting you will not be able to put them down until you reluctantly reach the last one.

In September, 2007, my best friend, Laverne and I went over to Blowing Rock, NC for the celebration of Mitford Days. We got to hear a lecture by Jan Karon about how she got started on these books, and tour the town where she lived when she wrote the books. The town was turned out in style for the Mitford Days. It is a very beautiful town with flowers everywhere.

We made pictures of the Episcopalian Church in Blowing Rock that seemed to have the same description of Father Tim's parish. It was so beautiful. Also, pictures of my friend, Laverne and me as we enjoyed the "Mitford Days" at Blowing Rock.

Blowing Rock had this festival in September to honor their hometown writer, Jan Karon. There were tour buses from all over the US there with members of Jan's fan club. Jan Karon has a website where you can become a member of her fan club. (http://mitfordbooks.com/) It is a very interesting website where members of her fan club can communicate and they can request prayer. You must become a member of her fan club to participate. Jan is very personable and friendly. Her talent for writing is definitely touched by God.

We heard Jan speak, and saw two plays based on the books Jan has written. Miss Fannie's Hats, and Jan Karon's Journey to Mitford were very entertaining.

Traveling with my friend, Laverne, is always fun! We laugh and have such fun, and we are both avid readers, so there is no end to our discussions! How great to have a best friend like her!
